How to Install Microsoft Edge (Dev) in Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Other Linux

Microsoft Edge web browser now is available for Linux via Dev preview channel.

For developers want to test their sites and apps on Linux, or those who just want to be one of the first to preview what’s new, this simple tutorial will show you how to install Microsoft Edge in Linux.

With our initial preview release, we’re aiming to provide a representative experience for developers who want to build and test their sites and apps on Linux. Web platform and developer tools features, including core rendering behaviors, extensions, browser DevTools, and test automation features, should generally behave consistently with other platforms like macOS and Windows.

Some end-user features and services may not yet be fully enabled. In particular, our initial release supports local accounts only, and does not support signing in to Microsoft Edge via a Microsoft Account or AAD account, or features which require signing in (such as syncing your settings, favorites, etc.). These features will be available in a future preview.

Install Microsoft Edge via DEB / RPM package:

The DEB (for Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint based systems) and RPM packages (for Fedora, openSUSE, etc) are available to download at the link below:

Grab the package matches your system and install it via apt, dnf, or other package managing tool.

  • For example in Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, you can run command:
    sudo apt install ./Downloads/microsoft-edge-*.deb

  • For Fedora, you can run command:
    sudo dnf install ~/Downloads/microsoft-edge-*.deb

Installing the DEB or RPM will also add the Microsoft Edge for Linux repository to receive future automatic updates.

Manually add the Edge for Linux repository and install the browser

For choices you can manually add the repository to your system and install the web browser.

For all current Ubuntu releases, Linux Mint, Debian, open terminal from app launcher and run following commands one by one:

  1. Run command to install the repository key:
    wget -O - | sudo apt-key add -

  2. Then add the apt repository:
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/microsoft-edge-dev.list'

  3. Refresh your system package cache by running command:
    sudo apt update
  4. And finally install the edge web browser via command:
    sudo apt install microsoft-edge-dev

How to Remove Microsoft Edge:

For Ubuntu / Debian based systems, remove the browser via apt command:

sudo apt remove microsoft-edge-dev

For Fedora, remove it via command:

sudo dnf remove microsoft-edge-dev
