For Ubuntu MATE users who are missing the classic Ambiant-MATE theme, here’s how to install it in Ubuntu MATE 22.04 and/or 23.10
Ubuntu MATE had its own fork of the Ambiance and Radiance GTK theme, which was used as default since 14.10 until 20.10. Now, it uses Ubuntu’s Yaru theme as default. And, the traditional Ambiant-MATE theme becomes an unofficial project maintained by community.
Step 1: Install Ambiant-MATE Theme
If you like this theme, the community maintains an official Ubuntu PPA to make it easy to install.
1. First, press Ctrl+Alt+T key combination on keyboard to open a terminal window. When it opens, run command to add PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lah7/ambiant-mate
Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it asks and hit Enter to continue.
2. If you’re trying this in Linux Mint MATE, then, you may need to manually refresh package cache by running command:
sudo apt update
3. Finally, install the icon them package, which also install GTK theme as dependencies by running command:
sudo apt-get install ambiant-mate-colours-all
Step 2: Apply Ambiant-MATE Theme
Once you installed the theme packages, search for and launch “Appearance” utility. Then, choose between the new theme and its variants and enjoy!
