Peppermint OS announced a new release on July 1, 2023. It’s now based on Debian 12 ‘Bookworm’!
Peppermint OS is a lightweight Linux distribution features XFCE desktop environment. It aims to be fast and easy on system resource.
It’s previously based on Ubuntu and used LXDE desktop as default. Since the last version that was released in 2022, it switched to XFCE and included 2 editions, one is based on Debian while another based on Devuan.
And, compare to XUbuntu/Debian (Xfce), the new Peppermint OS is even faster, perhaps due to its own app set and configuration.
What’s New
Peppermint OS now does not have a version number, just release date! The latest is 2023-7-1, and it’s only for Debian based edition.
Features include Debian 12 base, XFCE 4.18, Linux Kernel 6.1.
Other changes include a new logo instead of the previous sweety. User will see the new logo in the welcome dialog, and old logo has also been removed from the start menu.
And, according to the new logo, we could probably call it ‘pmos’ in short 😀.
As you see in the top feature image, the welcome dialog has also been redesigned with new logo, less options to simply things. It removed Reddit from the community icons since it’s unofficial community maintained, and Twitter also removed for unknown reason.
The startup and shutdown animation, meaning Plymouth theme, also changed in the release. Though I don’t know why the logo is not located in center of screen in my case.
Other changes in the release include:
- New Marwaita themes with few different accent colors.
- New Tela icons with a few different colors.
- Simply the Kumo UI and use lua.
- Simply the Suggests tool and Poppermint Hub.
- For more, see the official release note.
