This is a beginner’s guide shows you how to change the position of application window title-bar buttons in Ubuntu 20.04 & Ubuntu 22.04 with default Gnome Desktop.
The minimize
, maximize
, and close
buttons are default in the right of window header bar. You can change it to the left, and / or re-order them easily via following steps.
Change window buttons position via Gnome Tweak.
The Gnome Tweak tool has an option to do the job. You can first install it from Ubuntu Software.
Then open it and navigate to Window Titlebars in left pane. And finally toggle the placement to left or right.
Customize title-bar buttons position via Dconf Editor.
Also want to change the order, or separate them into two side? Use dconf editor instead.
First search for and install dconf editor from Ubuntu Software.
Then launch it and navigate to “org/gnome/desktop/wm/prefrences“, scroll down and click to go into settings for ‘button-layout’.
- Turn off the toggle of ‘Use default value’.
- Then set a custom value: use “:” (without quotes) to separate the three buttons. The buttons before “:” will show in the left of header-bar, others will show in the right.
- And finally click apply.
Keep in mind “:” is required either all buttons in the left or in the right.
