Gnome, the popular Linux Desktop Environment, officially announced the new 44 release on March 22, 2023! Let’s see what’s new in the release!
The new Gnome 44, code-name “Kuala Lumpur”, will be the default desktop environment in Ubuntu 23.04, Fedora 38, and optional in the next version of Arch and Manjaro Linux, etc.
New Features in GNOME 44
New features for this release include:
- Grid icon view in native File Chooser.
- Background Apps option in System Menu (Quick Settings).
- “Tab Overview” for Gnome Console app.
- New Wallpapers
- Redesigned “Sound”, “Accessibility”, “Mouse & Touchpad” settings.
- Add QR Code for WiFi hotspot settings.
- Support WireGuard VPN in settings.
- Sub-menu for Bluetooth in Quick Settings.
- Useless Flatpak run-time libraries now automatically removed.
- Display kernel and firmware versions in About dialog.
- Option to “Show Only Free Apps” in Gnome Software.
- Bigger user avatar icon and bold username in login/lock screen.
- Hide Thunderbolt page in Settings if not found
