This quick tutorial shows how to easily remove the line numbers and gray highlights in the default Gedit text editor in Ubuntu.
In Ubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu 20.10 Gnome Desktop, you’ll find the default Gedit Text Editor has line numbers at the beginning of each line, and highlights the focused line with gray background. For those who are unaccustomed to this appearance, it can be easily changed via following steps.
1. First open a document via Gedit, or just search for and open it from system application launcher.
2. When it opens, click the ‘three lines’ icon on header-bar to bring up app menu. Then select “Preferences” menu option.
3. On next app preferences dialog, you’ll see the options for “Display line numbers” and “Highlight current line”.
Just un-check them and the changes apply immediately.
That’s it. Enjoy!
