Debian 11 Released! Kernel 5.10 LTS with exFAT File-system Support

Debian 11 ‘bullseye’ finally released after more than 2 years of development, with next 5 years support!

Debian is a popular Linux Distribution suitable for personal computers, development servers to cluster systems, database, web, and storage servers. It’s a free and open-source community-driven project. And many other Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, based on Debian Linux.

Debian 11 for Desktop PC

The disco image is available with different desktop environments, including:

  • GNOME 3.38 – beautiful and elegant desktop for modern computers. Defaults in Ubuntu, Fedora.
  • KDE Plasma 5.20 – polished desktop built with Qt 5 and KDE Frameworks 5.
  • LXDE 11 – free desktop environment especially suitable for use on older PC.

Kernel 5.10, Package updates

Debian 11 comes with Kernel 5.10, the latest long term support (LTS) kernel release. exFAT file-system is supported out-of-the-box. As a result, users no longer need the exfat-fuse package. And the exfatprogs package is available with ability to create and check an exFAT filesystem.

With ipp-usb daemon, USB devices allow to be treated as a network device and most modern printers are supported without the need for vendor specific (often non-free) drivers.

The release also features better Wayland support, activates persistent journal functionality by default for Systemd, includes software for researching the COVID-19 virus on the sequence level, new Fcitx 5 input method.

The ‘bullseye’ release adds over 11294 new packages. Moreover, it removes thousands of ‘obsolete’ packages, and updates 42,821 packages including:

  • Apache 2.4.48
  • BIND DNS Server 9.16
  • Calligra 3.2
  • Cryptsetup 2.3
