Blender 2.90 Released with Initial Wayland Support

Free open-source 3D computer graphics software Blender 2.90 was released as the new major release series.

Building on the success of the 2.8 series, Blender 2.90 continues to polish the user experience, introducing improvements to EEVEE, Cycles, sculpt, VR, animation, modeling, UV editing and so much more. Blender integrates industry standard libraries such as Intel Embree, Intel OpenImageDenoise and NVidia Optix to provide a cutting-edge rendering experience.

Blender 2.90 new features in brief:

  • New physically based texture for smulating the colors of the sky.
  • Motion blur in EEVEE rewritten from scratch, add mesh deformation, hair, and sub-frame accumulation for better precision.
  • Faster motion blur with Intel Embree.
  • Denoise in 3D viewport as well as for final renders.
  • New shadow terminator offset setting.
  • NVLink support for CUDA and OptiX.
  • New deformation modes added to the pose brush.

How to Get Blender 2.90 in Linux:

For Linux portable, Snap, as well as source code, Mac OS, and Windows packages, go to the software download page:

For Ubuntu and other Linux that support the containerized Snap package, simply install the official snap by running command in terminal:

sudo snap install blender --classic

The community maintained Flatpak package, which runs in sandbox, is available in Flathub.

For those prefer PPA packages, keep an eye on this unofficial PPA for Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 20.04.
